Independent Learners ~ Introduction
Please use the menu on the left for details of specific courses or read on below for a general overview.
As part of our commitment to widen access to the study of the ancient world, we offer a range of independent learning courses in Latin at a variety of levels and in Classical Civilisation at AS.
Our Latin courses start with those designed for absolute beginners, and progress to those where original Latin literature from a range of authors is read for either pleasure or examination.
All courses are open to students anywhere in the world and there is no age limitation (at either end of the spectrum!).
Independent learners use a variety of resources (print and web-based) and the support of an e-tutor, who directs their learning, providing individual support and guidance for improvement.
You may start your course whenever you are ready and progress at whatever pace you wish. On most of our courses, e-tutor support is available for up to 40 weeks.
Some of our courses centre upon the Cambridge Latin Course and make use of the Course textbooks, ancillary print publications and online electronic materials.
The Cambridge Latin Course consists of a series of five books, designed to take students from their first steps in Latin up to the reading of original Latin literature.
The Cambridge Latin Course is more than a traditional grammatical approach to Latin learning, as we incorporate a strong civilisation element. To date we have courses available through
Book I,
Book II
and
Book III.
Our
GCSE Latin course
is available, with examination in summer 2010. For those who already have GCSE Latin (or equivalent),
we now offer
Latin literature
reading courses, where the aim is to read original Latin literature for pleasure. If desired, you may combine the reading of literature with a language
module and prepare for AS or A2 Level Latin. Alternatively, you may wish to study some Classical literature in translation and prepare for the AS in Classical Civilisation. Students wishing to take the
AS Level or
A2 Level
course should ensure that they have access to an appropriate examination centre before enrolling.
If you have a broadband internet connection, you may be interested in our
webcam lessons,
where one-to-one, 'face-to-face' support can be provided for any of our courses.
There are many considerations to address when starting a course as an independent learner. Therefore we have provided a
Frequently Asked Questions
section to help answer the most common queries. However, if you do not find an answer to your query,
please do
contact
us for help and advice.
